Hi,
I'm pretty new to this stuff, so please forgive me if this have been
discussed earlier, but I could not find a discussion on this subject in
the mail archive....
But first a little introduction of my self... I'm a programmer by
profession and is looking into implementing syslog for monitoring
applications, and as such have a great deal of practical know-how on
programming (Delphi), and a lot less when it comes to networking than
you guys, so I hope to learn a lot here...
My main problem at the moment is understanding the (soon to be) RFC, and
the reason for this is pretty simple. A lot of programmers need some
sort of syntax to be able to get a "overview" of where we are in a
process when reading(and understanding) a document.... Just look a
command syntax like TYPE (ms world, yes I know....:-) "TYPE [bla] [bla]
bla" you are never in doubt of what it means, what are optional and what
is mandatory, you even get a sequence of the options....
So - what I would like is some sort of syntax when ever possible
(practical?) and one suggestion could be in the lines of :
<pri>{Mmm dd hh:mm:ss hostname / ip} {{tag{ subtag}: the_message
where the brackets are optional... this would in my case save me a lot
of time when deciphering the document about the syslog-syslog.
Sorry for the long post.
Yours Truly
