I took another look at the OS X preference file com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist and discovered that there are lots of things you can change. One was the possibility to turn on afpServerEncoding (Boolean from NO to YES), but you can also set 'String' 'Number' 'Dictionary' 'date and some other things. Could it be possible to activate that 'incompatible version of the AFP protocol' again?
So far no luck.... But maybe someone with more knowledge on the subject can find a solution...
