From the terminal, in the directory you decompressed the software into.
(Directory is Unix speak for folder.) Of course, life is rarely that
simple. Unix systems have this nasty thing called dependencies, and
netatalk needed something called db (actually, Berkeley DB), so I gave up.
Why did I give up so easily, because there is the potential that there is a
huge chain of dependencies which will involve hours of work to build.
Besides, the website says TCP only for Mac OS X -- so chance are it won't
solve our little problem.

Netatalk 2 is still beta. Its also the one that needs Berkley DB4 which, as I wrote earlier and eagle has since proven is so generic it will install on OSX. If the site says TPC only one may be best to try 1.6 or lower. A bit of digging finds enough info for 1.4 something working under OSX, as its builds are so far behind the rest of the nix community its no suprise.

NOTE: dependencies are, strictly speaking, a Unix problem. They exist
everywhere, even in Mac OS. The problem is simply worse in Unix based
systems. >:(

Dependencies vary between point releases, many you can't get past but there maybe one that works. I found I needed to go back to a earlier realease on Netatalk than the version that worked with MDK9.2 when I upgraded to 10

One more way to get appletalk from OSX to sys6 (system 6 being the focus of this thread not nix) maybe through Basilisk, it works on unix, linux, BEos, NT and the win9x flavors so I guess it would work with OSX.
