You need something called an IRC client, like mIRC (Windows) or IRCle (Mac) or XChat (Unix/X) or Epic4 (Unix/text) or one of many others. Clients exist for computers old and new. You can, for example, find clients for System 6 and the Apple IIgs. I don't know about #Mac68k_SGI, but #68kmla is on EFNet. You can choose a server from <http://www.efnet.org/?module=servers>.
