Second: I have several Mac IIci which I use for spares. After testing, one was stored in situ hooked up to its monitor. One day, out of the blue, it turned on by itself. I turned it off the menu and it would immediately turn on again. After several such repititions, I then turned it off using the button in the rear of the CPU. Same thing happened.
This weird problem is not specific for Mac OS 6. At work I used a PowerMac 7500 with Mac OS 9.0. Some day it began to turn of by itself. The only possibility to switch the machine down was to pull the power line after the shut down command was completed. After a few months the same behaviour vanished.
For a few days now my PowerMac 8600 (System 9.1) at home exhibits the same behaviour after I installed a DVD-ROM drive and a FireWire card.
Now I have a reason: a bad PRAM battery
In both machines the battery is OK.
The only machine that always properly shut down is a great 18 year old Macintosh SE with system 6.0.7...
