I have a Mac SE running Finder 6.1.5/ System 6.0.5 and a Personal Laserwriter 300. When I pick it in the chooser it complains about missing a TrueType driver. I am not sure what it is asking for. I have searched around on the web but can't find anything that references this. ( I vaguely recall reading something about a patch for using this printer somewhere but I can't remember where. )
Can anyone point me in the right direction. This is a very nice printer in good condition and I would really like to use it with my SE.
Mac OS 6.0.7 was the first Mac OS version to support the TrueType technology.
While TrueType has been integrated in System 7 (and subsequent Mac OS versions) it was available as a system extension for Mac OS 6.
First, you need to upgrade to System 6.0.7 or 6.0.8.
The second step is to install the TrueType extension, True type fonts and the latest version of Font/DA Mover. All of this software is contained in the installer for the StyleWriter II printer.
You can download both software packages (Mac OS 6.0.8 and the StyleWriter II installer) from http://www.info.apple.com/support/oldersoftwarelist.html.
The TrueType technology works fine on the Mac SE, I use it since 1994 with Mac OS 6.0.7. Sure, it is a bit slow on a machine with the 68000 processor, but considerably faster than system 7.
