I do not think that is an entirely correct assessment of the
situation.  Apple always seems to insert code into the system
software that will prevent the system from booting if it is an
unfamiliar or unsupported that model.  Other than that, it seems
as though Apple reuses a lot of components over and over again
(e.g. the ADB, SCSI, and serial controllers), and I have been given
the impression that the video is entirely memory mapped on those
old machines.  So what I'm saying is that a determined programmer
may be able to get System 6 to run on slightly newer models by
disabling the boot-checks and ensuring that the system software
knows where (in memory) to find all of those controllers.
