This looks very useful for downstream distros, so thank you for this initiative! I wonder if it wouldn't be a good idea to provide point releases from such stable branches. As it turns out, v204 and v208 seem to be widely used by distros as they turned to be out to be quite stable or released at the right time. Maybe we could formalize that a bit, pick a "good" * release every year (every 6 months) and declare them as LTS releases with point releases from a stable branch. Since we have quite a few distro packagers with commit rights, we might even share the load a bit maintaining such stable branches. Comments?
