systemd-vmspawn creates a pty pair and connects the VM console to its slave. No sockets are involved. The lifetime of connection is that of systemd-vmspawn itself (when it goes away, pty master goes away as well). Monitor is multiplexed over this pty connection. Connecting the console to a UNIX socket would be something to consider for a headless mode. It would need a companion tool to conveniently attach and forward traffic to/from it though (similar to how pty forwarder works currently). That is sort of what I do in my home grown scripts (except I use SPICE GUI, not the serial console).
