Reminds me of the story Masback told me back in collegiate days.  Craig had graduated the year before I got to Princeton, but he still dropped by to work out from time to time while he was living in Plainsboro and commuting in to NY.
 
Anyway, the year after he ran his 3:52, he went to a special "speed training" camp that AAU or TAC or whoever was putting on for international caliber athletes.  As he recalled, whoever was running the camp said he could always pick up on who was the middle distance runner, and who was the sprinter -
 
The middle distance runners always ran with one arm a little further out, and a little cocked, because they're always used to wearing a watch and checking it while they run.  No such conditioning for the pure sprinters...
