Several members of the Cornell community have corrected my post that the Ithaca school used to have an Indian as its mascot. In fact, "Big Red" refers to the black bear (so why aren't they "Big Black") that has been the school's mascot since 1905.
I must have confused Cornell with that other upstate NY college that begins with a C - Colgate, whose teams were (and may still be) the Red Raiders. -- Jim Gerweck Running Times
