FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Saturday, July 05, 2003 Team USA flexes muscle on day 4 AMHERST, N.Y. – In a tune up for next week’s IAAF World Youth Athletics Championships, Team USA members got out of the blocks strongly at the USA Track & Field Youth Athletics National Championships. The 2003 California state triple jump champion, Brittany Daniels jumped to an outstanding distance in a windy 13.01m/42-8.25 to win the intermediate girls triple jump. She bettered the national mark of 12.54m/41-1.25 by Deana Simons in 1993, but the wind (+6.0) was well beyond the allowable mark for record-setting purposes. “My first and second phase felt good. I was happy and surprised to get out that far,” said Daniels. The 17-year-old won the 2002 Youth Athletics Championships intermediate girls triple jump and looks forward to compete next week at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Sherbrooke, Canada. “I’m excited, this will be my first international competition. I want to go out and do my best and work on keeping my phases more even,” Daniels continued. The 2003 Louisiana state long and triple jump champion, Frankie Gatson leaped a windy 7.03m/23-0.75 to win the intermediate boys long jump. “I wanted to get more speed down the runway. I was hoping to jump 24 feet, but today was not my day to do so,” said Gatson. The 2002 Junior Olympic triple jump champion began long jumping on March 15, 2003. The 16-year-old will be competing in the triple jump next week in Sherbrooke. 2002 Junior Olympic runner-up, Luke Johnson threw 17.03m/55-10.50 to win his first championship in the young men’s shot put. “My steps weren’t on today, but I am happy with the win. Hopefully, I will be able to improve going into the World Youth Championships,” said Johnson. The 17-year-old Texas native holds the Amarillo High School record with a personal best of 59-10 and will also compete next week in Sherbrooke. 2003 USA Junior Outdoor Championship runner-up, Chantelle Dron, won the intermediate girls 800m in 2:10.48, with a blistering kick over the final 200 meters. “I didn’t know what to expect, but I really felt good even though I ran slower than expected,” said Dron. “I was boxed in around the 250 meter mark and had to drop back and go around to take the lead.” This was a race she ran for strategy purposes. Dron, of New Hampshire, will run the 1,500m at the World Youth Athletics Championships next week. A triple state champion from Kansas, Trisa Nickoley was hoping to run under 2:06.00 as she captured the young women’s 800m title, but fell a little short in posting a time of 2:08.60. “I had perfect splits, but the wind got me on the last 100m,” said Nickoley. “I was shooting for 31s for all the 200m. I am happy with the win, but I did not get the time I wanted.” The 17-year-old will compete next week in Sherbrooke. In the intermediate boys 800m, Cody Harper of Albuquerque, N.M., just missed the Youth Athletics record by forty-four hundredths of a second to win in 1:53.22. “I started fast the first lap as the 200m was too fast for me. I was just too excited,” said Harper. “I was lucky because I passed out at the finish line. I didn’t realize that I was so close to a record, but I know I have a chance to break it at the 2003 Junior Olympics in Miami.” The three-time Nebraska Class C state champion, Greg Peterson ran a personal best of 1:52.97.64 in the young men’s 800m to win his first Youth Athletics championship. “This is big (accomplishment) for me because I’m from a small town and not used to this kind of strong competition. This is my second year competing and my heart was just pumping the whole time here,” said Peterson. In the sprints, 2001 World Youth silver medalist Michael Grant won the young men’s 200m in 21.50 seconds, running into a 3.0 headwind. “My start was slower than normal, I didn’t change gears the way I wanted during the race. I am happy with the win after running into the strong wind,” said Grant. Also a 2003 World Youth team member, Grant will compete in the young men’s 100m finals after posting a 10.76 in yesterday’s preliminary race. Hannah Carson established a record of 28.65m/94-0 in the bantam girls mini-javelin. The Arizona Cheetahs member bettered the 27.19m/89-2 mark set by Agnes Gallegos on July 6, 2001 in Decatur, Ill. Nick Frawley of Texas won the intermediate boys pole vault on his first attempt of 3.99m/13-1. The 15-year-old’s goal is to jump his age every year. “I wish I had done better, but I am happy to be here and win,” said Frawley. “The tailwind should have helped, but I was not able to take advantage.” The state of Nebraska showed their dominance in the intermediate girls shot put, claiming the top three spots. Michaela Wallerstedt won the 15-16 age division girls shot put with her toss of 13.72m/45-0.25, followed by Jenny Svoboda and Samantha Musil of the Cornhusker Flyers. “I kind of had a rough start, but I was able to pull off a win on my very last throw. This was a great morning for throwing the shot,” said Wallerstedt, who will also represent the USA next week at the World Youth Championships in Sherbrooke. Other Team USA members in action on Saturday included: Michael Haddan who placed second in the young men’s 800 meters; followed by USA teammate Selena Sappleton; Alexandria Anderson, Krystin Lacy and Nicole Leach, who placed 1-2-3 in the intermediate girls 200m; Courtney Champion, Cleo Tyson and Jessica Onyepunuka, duplicated that finish in the young women’s 200m; and Misti Barber won the young women’s shot put. Other standout Team USA performers included: Erica McLain and Gayle Hunter, who went 1-2 in the young women’s triple jump; Adam Fretwell, who placed second in the long jump; Sierra Hill and MacKenzie Hill, who advanced to the finals of the young women’s 400m hurdles, as did Nicole Leach in the intermediate girls 400 hurdles and Jason Richardson and Jamal Charles in the young men’s 400 hurdles. Luke Johnson and Nick Panezich placed first and second in the young men’s shot put, and Team USA teammates Kyle Hammerquist (discus) and Zack Midles (hammer) also participated.
