High school coach wins Marine Corps Marathon

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - Olympic hopeful Peter Sherry won
the Marine Corps Marathon on Sunday on a course that
went past the Lincoln Memorial and Washington
Monument.
Heather Hanscom of Alexandria captured the women's
division in her first marathon and qualified for the
U.S. Olympic trials in April.
Sherry, a cross-country high school coach in suburban
Herndon, was timed in 2 hours, 25 minutes, 7 seconds
in a field of about 18,000 runners. He already has
qualified for the Olympic trials in the marathon and
5-kilometer run.
``The last two miles were tough,'' Sherry said. ``It
was a struggle but the crowds pulled me through.''
Eric Post of Fairfax was second in 2:27:49, followed
by Aaron Church of South Riding in 2:28:24. Church led
the first 14 miles but stopped to tape his feet.
Hanscom was timed in 2:37:59, with Lindsey Gannon
(2:58:46) of Britain second and Kristin Van Eron
(3:00:14) of Timonium Md., third.
``Eleven years ago I had a brain tumor removed, and I
just dreamed about this ever since,'' Hanscom said.
The race offered no prize money and the 26.2-mile
course began and ended at the Iwo Jima Memorial across
the Potomac River from Washington.
