Darold Williamson of Baylor :
Baylor junior Darold Williamson recorded the top time in the world so far this season over 400 meters at 44.59 seconds during the Michael Johnson Classic on Saturday. Williamson, a two-time All-American in the 400 and a member of three All-American relays squads, including a pair of NCAA Championships, also helped lead the 4x100 meter relay team to victory with a regional qualifying time of 39.57. Williamson is now qualified in three events, including the national-leading 4x400 meter relay, for the NCAA Midwest Regional on May 28-29 hosted by Texas A&M University. Williamson and the Bears return to action at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships which will take place from April 29-May 1 in Norman, Oklahoma.
Kim Smith of Providence :
Providence junior Kim Smith placed second overall in the 5,000 meters at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays on Friday night with her time of 15:09.72. Shalane Flanagan, who competed unattached and is redshirting this season for North Carolina, won the event just ahead of Smith in 15:09.67. Smith's time set a new in-season collegiate record over 5,000 meters which stood for nearly 19 years. The previous record was held by Oregon's Kathy Hayes who clocked 15:23.03 on May 4, 1985. Smith is coming off an outstanding NCAA indoor season which saw her win both the 3,000 and 5,000 meter titles in Fayetteville, Arkansas while also setting collegiate records in the process. The 2004 USTCA Indoor Female Athlete of the Year is now qualified for the NCAA East Regional on May 28-29 hosted by The University of Florida. Smith and the rest of her teammates return to action when they compete at the historic Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from April 22-24.
