                        FIELD SURPASSES 1500 FOR NATIONAL MASTERS

        EUGENE--The number of entrants into the 2000 National Masters 
Championships, to be held in Eugene, Oregon from August 10 through the 13, 
has topped the 1500 mark for the first time in the 33-year history of the 
event.
        With the close of entries on July 24th, a total of 1,508 athletes had 
entered an average of over two events each.  Approximately 14% of the 
entries were submitted on-line, via the eugenechamps.com event website.The 
ages of the athletes range from 30 to 88.  In addition to entrants from 
nearly every state in the union, there will be athletes from Germany, 
Australia, India, Britain, Lithuania, and Canada, who are allowed to 
compete as guest competitors.  A breakdown of the number of entrants by 
event is available for viewing on the eugenechamps.com website, along with 
the final time schedule.
        The Championships is the premiere annual track & field competition for 
American Masters athletes.  The event has been held previously in Eugene in 
1984, 1987 and 1994.  Athletes compete within five-year age groups in every 
standard track & field event, plus pentathlon and racewalks.
