Y ask Y: The UK's answer to T&FN is now online at http://www.athleticsweekly.com It's pretty skimpy now -- except for too many ads. But there's lots of potential for growth with promise of an extensive results and features archive. In its hard-copy form, AW reads like People magazine -- very chatty, very quick reads, with tons of color photos and personality profiles. Tony Ward writes an opinion column (which I haven't seen online yet). AW also takes masters seriously, even running an item recently about veterans columnist Pete Mulholland having had his laptop computer stolen while covering a recent British meet. (Shades of USA: the San Diego Union-Tribune's Mark Zeigler had his laptop filched from the press box at the Sacramento OT.) The AW site is part of britsport.com -- which hosts Web pages for a bunch of other sports, including "disability sports," Scottish squash and something called SunnyD. AW's editors have had e-mail addresses for a few years, so this site is a long time coming. Not much competition yet for other track sites, but a nice addition from across the pond.
