Unlikely, although I don't know how much he was making running marathons.
As far as I know, the world 100K did not have prize money. Although it
unquestionably brings together the world's best ultrarunners, it is not even
officially considered a world championships by the IAAF.
There are no more than half a dozen ultras in the U.S. with prize money, and
the amount is relatively small at those races. While there are some races
with money in South Africa and Asia, the bottom line is that even the best
ultrarunner in the world would have trouble making a minimal living from
ultra prize money.
I imagine that Dan is doing it for the challenge and the new experience, not
the money.
