Personally, I love the 4k. But I do understand your wish to see everybody duke it out in one race. Honestly, in the u.S. anyway, I think most of the athletes do the 12k if they want to be in the more competitive race - thus I don't see the dilution of competition you're concerned about. As to the 4k being too easy, as you imply with your comment about doing that as a 12-year-old, puh-leeze... Even at the U.S. meet last year, in ankle-deep sucking mud, the leaders went through the 1k in 2:40ish, and some of them died pretty hard :-) World's is even another level (I would guess).
