I don't want to add more fuel to the fire ... what you are saying is for the
most part true, and this whole discussion is really a matter of perspective
and opinion.  But, even the most elite milers run a lot of aerobic endurance
type workouts.

In the "off-season" (when he ought to be running 12k XC, ha-ha) Morceli runs
5 x 2000m at exactly 5:25 ... 4:20 1600 pace ... twice a week he does these
workouts!

Walker used to do 8 weeks of buildup above 100 mpw, some of it at 4:50 pace,
TWICE A YEAR, for the  NEW ZEALAND season and the European season.

Only the pure 800/1500m runners (Coe, Cram, Elliott) get away with less
miles and aerobic volume ... like the marathoners train.

That argument might make sense if there were the same number of people
moving down as there are moving up, but I'd guess the ratio at least 90/10
in favor of moving up.  Of course that's going to heavily skew the
results.

A few good milers might train like marathoners, but most would probably be
5 minute milers if they did.
