Athletes of the last 15-20 years have been brainwashed by the
supplement industry and coaches who have bought into the whole
pill-popping game.

Eat your fruits and vegetables instead.

To believe this is foolhardy.
No one, and I mean no one gets what they need from the foods we eat.  The
foods are treated, pasteurized, precooked, etc. to the point that they lose
their virility.  Some foods are detrimental to success, for example beef.  In
order to get the needed amount of protein we need you have to eat a healthy
amount of beef, this is not a good thing for those attempting to run 9.9 and
10.7.  Beef is difficult to digest, and sits in the system.  In other words,
supplements are needed by all, not just athletes, and it is not an excuse it
is a fact.  It is not the consumers responsibility to test and label
products, that includes athletes.
This is not about excuses, it is about what is right.  What is right is
knowing that what I have purchased, IS what I have purchased.  You have
exhibited a very old school mindset, that simply is out dated.  Like
everything else sports improve.  That means the athletes improve, the tracks
improve, the officials improve, the reporters improve, the coverage improves,
etc.
If Marion stopped taking supplements for a year she would lose, get hurt, and
not sustain her level throughout the season.  These young men and women push
the limits of their genetics 2 to 3 times a week, for 10 months out the year,
and you want us all to believe they can get by on fruits and vegetables.
That is not going to happen.
And to answer the impending question headed this way, no it was not the same
back in the day.  The season was different, the level of competition was
different, and the intensity was not the same.
