The all-star games and home run competitions are all exhibitions. They
don't count for anything except publicity. The US Champs track meet is for
real; it's not merely an exhibition.
Here's a better analogy to what MG pulled at Eugene. It was sent to me by
private e-mail and is reprinted with permission:
"I can just imagine the network/fan reaction...Pedro Martinez (vs) Roger
Clemens...Pedro comes out in the first inning, throws nine pitches, strikes
out three and then says to everyone, I'll see you at the world series. Think
the Red Stockings would be back on TV anytime soon?"
