My phone does not have the option to change any audible alerts. When I turn on
my phone, a window pops up to tell me I have messages. There is only one
message alert sound, there isno separate alert for VM, so I guess that same
sound is used for both voice mail and text messages.

Most phones will give you an audible beep when there is VM
waiting. Most phones also give you this audible when you turn on
your phone if VM is waiting, and i think most phones can be set to
periodically alert you that you have VM waiting.
