This is a good idea in concept, since a change of responsibility (COR)
no longer requires a contract extension. However, you have to keep
the existing plan in order to serve out the remaining (shorter)
contract term - in this case until September.

You are proposing to split a family plan into two individual plans.
For *both* lines, moving to individual plans will most likely require
a contract extension, because most plans are considered "promotional"
(basically, any plan with free unlimited nights).

Just be careful, so you are not surprised. A COR will work fine
(without a contract extension) when the plan is not changed, however a
plan change is required when splitting up a family plan.
