Your friends should talk to their providers in Scotland and obtain the unlock
codes for their phones. As an example, if you are a T-Mobile customer in good
standing, they usually provide you with the unlock code three months after you
got the phone (only when you ask for it of course).

Curious -- what site did you find that prepaid SIM deal on? Relatives/friends
from Germany visit me often, and it would make sense for me to also have a
non-expiring prepaid SIM lying around.
