It somewhat comes down to what your preference is with phone
manufacturers. I've always used Nokia and like them for their
standardization of interface from one model to the next. Some people
like Motorola, Siemens, Ericsson etc.

I use a Nokia 6310i (which was never sold by T-Mobile) but it works
splendidly for me both at home in the US in Canada, in Mexico, in
Europe and in Isral.

And be careful about tribands. They're not all alike as far as what
they'll work with. All or most T-Mobile "world" phones work on
900/1800 which is the normal GSM frequencies in Europe, Asia and
Africa. Some triband phones as sold by AT&T Wireless/Cingular are
850/1800/1900 which means they'll work fine in the Americas but may be
lacking in Europe since the main mobile frequency in Europe is 900.
1800 is also used but not as widely. If you want to be sure and get
the best coverage in Europe you should get a 900/1800/1900 phone rather
than a 850/1800/1900 phone.
