Donna, Generally you can switch plans without a contract extension as long as you do not switch to a plan with promotional extras. If you go to your My Tmobile page you can click on Change Plan and it will show you plans that are available. Promotional plans will be indicated by an * (asterisk).
Looking at my account, I have three phone still under contract, I see that the 1000 minute is a promotional plan so next choice is the 800 minute plan (same price but less minutes which is why it isn't promotional). It looks like all the My Fave plans are NOT promotional, so you could go to the 1000 minute plan there.
