I am not participating member of the t13 committee, but
an observation from a software side.
>with the above OSs (98se, ME, and 2k) that did NOT come with DMA enabled,
>I am ALWAYS interested in understanding what went WRONG.
>I CAN NOT make any comment/assurances about
>1) OSs that you install
>2) drives that you buy in the channel.
I observe that the number of drives in PCs at the office where I work
bought AFTER the initial purchase of PC
outnumbers the drives that came in the box pre-installed.
This is due to the addtion of drives later on or replacement due to defect.
Well, the ratio is probably close to 50% each and slightly higher
on the bought-after caregory. (It may be higher than this. I
guess it in a conservative manner here.)
But still this bought-after drives need to be supported from
the view point of ordinary users.
So I am wondering what would be the best thing we can do
at T13 level to make sure such drives be
supported without much problem standard-wise.
Yes, one solution is to disable DMA all the time.
(However, I am not sure if this is acceptable to many eager users.)
I wish I could force the users of our software to use only
laboratory-tested drives, just in case. This unfortunately
will never happen in PC market.
By the time the software gets popular enough after marketing,
the drives we may have tested initially will be out of the market and
hard to find, and people start to ask if a certain new brand of disks
which we never heard of can be used, etc..
This repeats over and over again.
By the way, if we include engineering workstations,
the number of drives at the office
is clearly higher for the bought-after category.
This is probably due to the high-level of compatibility maintained
among SCSI (disk) drives, but there may be other reasons
which I am not aware of.
