Having spent a little time with the AV/IT issue myself, one of the problems
is the current AV proposal is a mix and match of what a couple of the drive
vendors have currently implemented with some really cool ideas added.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't believe any of the drive guys have
actually implemented the AV command set as proposed. This makes it
difficult for an implementer to utilize it as spec'd. This also makes it
very difficult to find deficiencies in the current proposal. The other
problem as I see it is that the AV market hasn't quite burst onto the scene
the way some of us expected it too. This I think also slowed everyone as
well. Sounds to me like the drive folks and the AV folks need to get
together and work it out again. When they have come to agreement of what
the really need and want, the proposal should be rewritten and resubmitted.
I think the existing proposal, although a lot of thought and work has been
put into it, is not going to really meet the needs of the AV users.
This is strickly my personal opinion and does not reflect the opinion of my
employer in anyway.

Hi Matt,
The host side folks who had been active contributors to the definition of
what has evolved into the Streaming command set have been less active in T13
of late. I don't think they have attended a meeting in about a year. So,
the rest of us have been floundering around trying to intuit how this should
be defined, and it's been frustrating. Here is an excerpt from the minutes
of the last T13 meeting:
Ron Roberts moved and Andre Hedrik seconded that this annex [the Streaming
model annex] not be included in ATA/ATAPI-6. Mark Evans requested a
friendly amendment to remove all elements of the Streaming command set from
ATA/ATAPI-6. This was accepted by Ron and Andre. Marc Noblitt requested a
friendly amendment to include the Streaming command set in a future
ATA/ATAPI standard. This was accepted by Ron and Andre.
The consolidated motion is: The Streaming model annex shall not be included
in ATA/ATAPI-6, all elements of the Streaming command set shall be removed
from ATA/ATAPI-6, and the Streaming command set shall be included in the
next standard version of an ATA/ATAPI standard. The motion failed 8:2:3 (to
have passed, this motion would have required 50% of the membership and
two-thirds of those voting to have voted in favor).
So, in my opinion, the only reason that the A/V stuff is still in
ATA/ATAPI-6 is because we didn't have enough voting members at the meeting.
The membership during the meeting was 21. Had the three "abstainers" voted
in favor of the motion the stuff would be out. Assuming there are 16 or
fewer voting members in attendance when this motion is proposed again in
Kauai (and it will be), if 11 vote in favor of the motion, A/V is out of
A/A-6.
Please feel free to call or send an email to me if you have any additional
questions.

Mark Evans

I truly wish it were so simple. However, a good technical debate would
serve as a welcome distraction. Let me try to "help".
>From reading the committee meeting minutes, it seems the AV command
extensions are on shaky ground? When I was on the disk side of the
cable, this all seemed like such a good idea. But I must say that now
that I'm on the other end and faced with needing to manage a mix of
"AV" and "IT" data, this looks to be an absolute nightmare. What is
the real status of this?

I think most of us have been pre occupied with events of the last week.
Anyone with bright ideas on how we can use the ATA interface to fight
terrorism?

OK... It has been way too quiet on the [temp t13] list (reflector)
the last few days. I think the last messages posted here were about
10 days ago. So this is just a message to let you know that [temp
t13] (and tgi.com) are running just fine and so far unaffected by the
current Internet worm problems.
I have also had no trouble accessing the official T13 web site
(www.t13.org) during the last week. I have been able to access
the official ftp site (ftp.t13.org) some days but it is real slow
and does not appear to be up-to-date. I also don't know the status
of the official list server (reflector), but [temp t13] will
continue to operate until it is running.
