I just checked my laptop working copy and I do not have local modifications
in this area. I only have experiemented with adding gtk+ or whether to use
E17 based stuff (I fear I can not get comfortable with either).

Anyway these fonts should be in:
  font-alias
  font-misc-misc
  font-cursor-misc

I think the fixes fonts are in the font-misc-misc and font-alias has a fixed ->
something
alias IIRC.

When you log in at the livecd prompt, do you have fonts in /usr/X11/share/fonts?

Does running the postinstall manual change something:

  /etc/postinstall.d/xorg
