The main reason I hadn't commented yet is that the recent updates
haven't been producing a working initrd for me, and I can't understand
why. Actually, they don't produce *any* initrd image--the file is
missing.

maybe you can provide some more details about your target configuration
and perhaps some logfile parts describing your initrd trouble?
Generally, for the generic desktop target, the 2.6.27 updates work,
kernel and initrd builds and run fine on x86 and x86_64.
I got the feeling we have a new dietlibc regression caused by my last
binutils update. I guess I have to start a new reference build from scratch
to know for sure - that could be a cause.
