At the rate at which these threads are piling up I'll never get any real
work done... :)

Regarding open source:
I confess I have mixed feelings about open source. I like the principle,
but on the other hand it's *my* code and someone else will probably just
muck it up. :) Oh, well, I suppose we have to let our children go at some
point...

I have been seriously considering how to make my code available, given that
there are some proprietary sections in it. If I can sort something out
(perhaps after feeding my boss a lot of expensive wine), I'd be quite happy
to release my code. Curiously, I was dealing with exactly the same issue
for another of my programs a couple of minutes ago...
I'm pretty sure I can work things out. If all else fails, I could perhaps
chop out the proprietary parts (I'd hate to lose them, but they're not
irreplaceable, except maybe for the XML parser). Fortunately I haven't used
too much proprietary code yet, so it shouldn't be too difficult. The end
product might not look quite as elegant, but at least it would be open
source.

Regarding XML:
I like the flexibility of XML, and the fact that it is readable! I started
out using binary files, but XML is so much easier to user. I'm also quite
happy to write specific import functions to accept patterns from other apps,
but it would be great if we could develop some sort of standard format.
Bonnie's suggestions are a good start; I confess that I occasionally dive
into the development before I have a solid spec. Ok, I lie, I hardly ever
use a spec except the one in my head. :)

Cheers,
Eckhard.
