If you look in my TTW under Written Evidence, in Chapter 1, you'll find
:-
"In the Edda, a poem in an Icelandic manuscript dated between the ninth
and twelfth centuries, the following words occur in the Second Song of
Gudrun
.
hunskar meyjar
paer's hlada spjoldum
ok gora gulfarget
translation: Hunnish maidens who make gold bands on (or with) tablets".
Then some remarks how 'spjoldum' was close to 'spjald', a word for a
tablet used until recently in Iceland.
I cannot on the instant find where I got this from.... certainly not
from Lehmann-Filhes book, who quotes the Simrock translation referred to
by Guido Gehlhaar, but obviously a subsequent publication, when more
research had been done. I will look through my four huge files of
references if you like to find it. Lehmann-Filhes does have a footnote
here saying the translation (about making carpets) is further discussed
in 'Zietshrift des Vereins fur Volkskunde, 1899, Heft 1, page 30....
which I do not possess.
(Thank goodness I wrote TTW! I would never otherwise be able to summon
up even this amount of knowledge, acquired nearly 20 years ago!
