The N African tablets made with playing cards had 4-holes burnt in them.
This gave a smooth-edged hole. Drilling a set, clamped between boards,
also works well. Roman tablets are often decorated with little circular
incised designs, showing that they did have drills.

Ancient four-sided tablets with six holes, two in the centres of
opposite sides, really puzzled me when writing TTW. I tried threading
all six and got nowhere. Then I realised that those two extra holes were
meant to be used alone... and I suddenly discovered all the two thread
techniques. See Appendix in TTW.
