About the antecedents of the band in question.
Alexia Seeger (then Hunter, now married to the great folk musician, Mike
Seeger) sent me the magnificent silk band, part of which is shown on the
cover of TTW, 2nd edition. 
In thanking her, I suggested she had invented a new system of patterning.
She immediately replied "But I got it from your book, Fig 96; everything  I
did is implicit in that diagram".
In the text I say that I got that system from a Coptic piece; I had been sent
a slide of it by a Danish museum and analysed part of it for that diagram; it
was partly brocaded.

So that type of patterning has quite a respectable history.... and is to my
mind more elegant than that using oblique stripes of even width.
