Merry Christmas to all of you tablet weavers out there!

As a tiny present to everyone, I wanted to tell you about a totally amazing textile I had the great privilege of studying recently.  Originally in the collection of Leopold Ikle
and now in possession of one of his grandchildren, this textile, dated to ca. 1200 C.E.and probably of German origin, appears to be part of a stole.  It measures ca. 88 cm in length and between 13.2 and 14.5 cms in width from top to bottom.  It consists of several different sections of tabletwoven bands that have been joined together.  The bands are brocaded AND embroidered with pictures of ten different saints. The brocade and embroidery threads are colorful silks and "spun-gold".  The embroidery is done in several different techniques with very fine split stitch used on the faces.

We are exploring publication possibilities, and I will keep you informed about when and where this occurs.

Happy Holidays!
