I think the term "missed-hole" is widely used for techniques which use the visibility of the weft or the indentation left by the absent thread that it would be confusing to change that name. TTW (pp93-4, 1996 edition) describes missed-hole as a method of patterning "which relies entirely on variations in the surface texture and is usually woven on a warp of one colour." Peter categorises it as producing horizontal or diagonal grooves, but comments that it is usually done with a thick weft which becomes visible at these points. As for Guido's 'Scandinavian' technique, I don't know of a common name for it (but then, I'm no expert on traditional TW techniques). It seems rather like the 2 thread double-faced weave on pp204-7 of TTW (1996) but there is mention there of it being used in Scandinavia. Pp233-5 has an analysis of a band from Mammen, Denmark, which uses 2 holes but that also relies on texture, having only a single colour warp, though Peter also shows the technique done with a contrast weft to emphasise the design lines. Perhaps Peter will chime in here soon. -- Jenny Kosarew from England mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Home Page: http://www.whorls.freeserve.co.uk Berkshire Guild Page: http://www.whorls.freeserve.co.uk/guild The Braid Society: http://www.braidsociety.org Send private reply to Jenny Kosarew <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ----------------------------------------------------------- To stop receiving tabletweaving (not tabletweaving-digest), send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: unsubscribe tabletweaving.
