There is a very nice museum (Stadtmuseum?) in Nurnberg, if your friend is going to be in the south. It has a well-displayed collection of German ethnic clothing. It also has (if your friend is interested) one of the finest collections of old musical instruments I've ever seen anywhere--wonderful old krummhorns, the complete evolution of the piano, viols of every stripe--just great.

Separately, in Nurnberg, there's a sweet little toy museum.
