I left out a bit...

Linda, it sounds like you are doing something very
similar, but here's my solution:

For structural analysis, I have a short warp of 8 cards
threaded identically with 4 different colors of cheap
yarn. I can set them up in any desired fashion (S or Z, etc) 
and weave with them using cheap bamboo skewers as weft.

That way I can pull apart the warps, slide them together,
and generally get a good idea of what's going on inside.
When I'm done, I can pull the skewers out and start
over. :)
