Sponsored by TWIST - Tablet Weavers International Studies & Techniques
Hi folks,
even though tablet weaving could be so simple, basic terms seem to
confuse beginners due to a lack of "standarized" terms (and discussion
are long ongoing and really funny most of the time these terms are
discussed). These include mainly the ABCD and SZ definiton. But
unfortunately that's not all: even left or right now is a discussable
term as far as I recognized from the ongoing discussion and even
forward/backward turning is a thing that is not _always_ (but happily
mostly) well-defined.
There are so many ways a warp can be threaded or a pattern can be read.
I even know of weavers who do not weave "towards them" (which IMHO is
the most used way) but "away from them", and this requires adaption of
pattern descriptions.
Concerning my opinion (and descriptions on my webiste) I have to state
this concerning the terms:
The warp is woven towards the weaver, i.e. the finished warp is near the
weaver while the unfinished warp is away from the weaver.
- SZ
Can either be threading (most used) or tablet positioning (e.g. Otfried
Staudigel). As far as it is clearly stated what it is I can understand
both clearly. Threading and tablet positioning are vice versa, e.g. a S
threaded tablet is in Z position.
- forward/backward
I have a very impressive definition from Otfried Staudigel: It is
compared to the way a vehicle tire moves when moving the vehicle. When
tablets are turned "forward" it is the same direction the tire moves on
a surface when the vehicle moves forward towards the unwoven warp and
vice versa.
- ABCD
This depends a lot on the way people learned tablet weaving. My
understanding is that forward turning moves the top hole from A to B to
C to D while backward turning does it the other way (D-C-B-A). Therefore
it is:
A D
weaver (woven end) unwoven warp
B C
IMHO this seems to be the opposite way as Carolyn uses in her patterns
(that's why I was nearly going mad 3 years ago trying to weave the Birka
strapwork motif), which is the same way used in GTT. Both definitons
(sometimes called "clockwise" and "counterclockwise") are used in tablet
weaving literature and understanding. I have no idea which one is the
more used definition of "ABCD".
Please correct me if I am wrong (esp. when comparing different ways how
terms are defined).
