I am just back from John Gillow's splendid display of ply-split camel girths at his house at 50 Gwydir Street, Cambridge, CB1 2LL. (tel 01223 313 803) This show is ONLY on from today to 8th December, daily from11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is one of his regular selling shows and also includes Sindhi embroidery and miscellaneous textiles from earlier trips. He has a wall dramatically covered with about 30 girths, hanging ceiling to floor, the best collection I have ever seen. Not a dull one there. He collected them in Pakistan from the Thar Desert area, just across the border from the Indian part of that desert where I collected mine. Several have brilliant red and orange dyed goat hair in them as well as the normal black/white yarn. SCOT, POT and TLOI structures are all there. I went there with the firm purpose of not adding to my own collection of about a 100.... but one conquered me! If you want to see an unusual collection of these wonderful ply-split braids, do go... it is also a very rare chance to buy one at a price below normal shop prices. John also has some of his books there, ' World of Textiles', and 'Textiles of Africa' (the latest; an incredible all-colour compliation)... and my ply-split book..... !
