Please do not avoid Devils Club at all costs, just be very careful around
it. It won't pull you into it's thorns and it's not carnivorus. It is a very
large leaved, red-flowered plant with an unique and highly valued place in
native american and canada's first peoples' pharmacoepia.
A water ouzel, also called a dipper, and called a "teter ass" by my
grandfather, is a small inconspicuous gray bird that makes nests of moss and
raises it's young behind waterfalls in small mountain streams. It does not
migrate and you can see it happily standing on a rock in the middle of
winter with roaring water all around and snow on the banks, when all of a
sudden it pops off the rock and into the frigid stream, swimming underwater.
It eats bugs and such under rocks in the stream. A truely amazing little
creature.
