I used cotten crocet thead size 10 as warp. I put one
thread per hole in my cards. For every 2 cards (8
threads).. I used 8 oz of triangualr fishing weights.
The fishing wieghts were on the big part of a
tear-drop shaped shower curtain hook, and the warp
threads were hooked on the narrow part of the hook,
where normally the shower curtain hangs.
I was weaving a 2 color 50 card "double weave" pattern
with the edge cards weighted seperatly (1 curtain rod
for 1 card, same weight proprotion) since those cards
were turning the same direction for the entire warp.
I found out:
1) it is necearrary to carefully work the excess twist
all the way to the end of the warp by the weights
about every 10 to 15 picks. (more than that, and the
excess twist prevented me from moving my cards into 2
packs)
2) more weight would have been nice, but less than 2
oz wieght per 4 threads did not let me keep my warp
taut enought to work well.
3) I laid the warp out horizontally over my table...
as long as I countuousey worked on the project, it was
fine, but if it was left for a couple of days, The
weights tanlged up around each other, and had to be
untwisted and freed before resuming weaving.
4) some sort of warp seperator is neceassary (such as
a horizontal comb)
5) Using water filled soda bottles for weights does
not work! (i ended up with uneven tensioned warp, and
the bottles hopelessly twisted into a mess. I gave up
on that warp, cutting it into bits to resuce my cards.
(soda bottles work fine on a 'normal viking' warp
weighted loom weaving twills or tabby because the
those warp threads don't twist around each other.)
