Now, I am just thinking outloud here, but wasn't Ethiopia under German control for a time?  Perhaps tablet weaving was introduced to the locals during that time period.   Ooops.  Ethiopia was under Roman rule at one time, then ruled by Italy in the 1930s, not Germany.  Perhaps that is where the technique passed into Ethiopia.   Nancy
