Hi Cayenne, a lot of books fail to explain this (most signifant) step but TTW is very precise in describing reversals. They are indicated by a small circle. You can see many examples in Chapter 9. Another way to show twining direction is the use of shading of the background. I use both notations in my own software (www.theloomybin.com). I find the dot-notation completely sufficient for simple patterns. They give me the information that I need and don't disturb the pattern. For more complicated patterns where you have a chance to lose your place it is better to have shading. In addition I can generate small arrows that tell you which way to slide the cards when using the 2-pack system. The diagrams on www.theloomybin.com/cw/braid3.html show the arrow and shading option.
