Thank you, Michael. I found it in TTW. I, of course, was looking for "velvet" in the index and didn't think to look for "pile." The band pictured in the book I am reading appears to be the piece of the band in Plate 207 on p. 353 of TTW (orig version, not R&R paperback edition--I don't know if the pagination is the same) that is lying to the right. TTW says this band is in the V&A. I must try to see it next time I am across the Pond.
Now that I've read Peter's conjectures about how such bands might have been woven, I'm even more impressed w/ the concept of such bands having been woven.
