I dropped by the CW exhibit yesterday afternoon as a group of us made
our way from St. Pete, through various exhibits in various Fla towns,
and finally up to the Tampa Airport. By luck, I happened to be with
someone who had been present when Michael's exquisite neckpiece was
purchased. Michael: you'll be happy to know that your beautiful
piece will be going to a truly appreciative home. Pat Stewart, a
meticulous and talented multishaft weaver who lives in Berkeley, CA,
is the very happy new owner of this piece. Pat is shy, doesn't sell
her work, and doesn't have a website where you can see what she does,
but I can tell you from first-hand experience that her work is beautiful.
A few words about the CW conference: I thoroughly enjoyed Gudrun's
"cross-pollination" class, and had an opportunity to sit in on about
the last 15 min of John's "Quest for the Perftect TW Loom" class (I
was on the education cte for this conference, so I was pretty much
rushing around to a bunch of different classes in some of the time
slots--making sure the college's data projectors were working, making
sure there were enough chairs in each classroom, etc.). As a member
of the cte, I was very happy with the mix of TW classes we could
provide--many thanks to those of you who submitted proposals--and
delighted with the turnout from TWIST members. I believe that this
is the first time since TWIST spun itself off into a separate
organization (after its start in life as a CW study group) that we
have had this many TW seminars at this conference.
As most of you know, our keynote speaker this year was supposed to
have been Peter Collingwood. However, due to health concerns, he was
in the event, unable to make the trip. Teams of people then formed
on both sides of the Pond and created the most amazing 2-DVD set of
Peter being interviewed about his life as a weaver by two very fine
UK weavers, Stacey Harvey-Brown and Wendy Morris. The films were
shown at the CW conference (in the keynote-speech time-slot, of
course), and each conference participant received a boxed copy of the
disks. The DVDs will also be sold (at a very nominal price--I think
US$15 is what was said) to others who would like to own this very
special item. All proceeds above the costs of production will go, at
Peter's request, to supporting CW publications. I'll post to this
list where you can purchase this DVD set when I find out.
I hope you all enjoyed the conference as much as I did.
And now to catch up on sleep. . .
Ruth
