In September I announced a message about corkscrewing in card weaving.
Today I want to grab my last chance to follow up in this year although
the message looks already very dated.
For those of you who saw me at Convergence in Florida may remember my
neckpiece with the TWIST pin. After the conference I was asked to weave
a similar piece. You can see pictures at
www.theloomybin.com/cw/corkscrew.html.
The new piece consists of 4 parts: flat beginning - tube - reverse tube
- flat ending. The tube has a core of several threads of crochet cotton.
The woven yarn is highly twisted S-plied silk. The cards are Z-threaded.
Up to the midpoint all cards are turned forward creating S-twist and a
lot of torque in the tubular section (very nice, right?). The torque
developed rightaway while I was weaving. In the second half the cards
are turned backwards. I expected to get some torque here but there was
almost none.
However, the flat piece spiraled more than anything else (after being
taken off the loom). This surprised me I encourage you to experiment
with these effects. It is fun and easy to do.
Btw. there is an additional thing going on in the black/white piece. I
manipulated the core and a large 3-D corkscrew developed.
Happy New Year,
Gudrun
