"some ajax components" means Tacos (such as AjaxLinkSubmit).

There are no errors (or any messages) in the javascript console,
but still, the entire page is refreshed.

By "some ajax component", do you mean Tacos?

If so, it falls back to a full refresh when the Javascript fails.  
Open the Javascript console in FF, and check for error messages.
