DojoMenuBar is just plain slow. I eventualy abandoned it for a homegrown menu solution which renders about 2000 times faster and isn't nearly as buggy. As for the AjaxDirectLink compatibility problem, I never tested that particular problem, but I had plenty of ajax functionality in pages that included the menu bar before I ripped it out of my projects.
