Why? You could just as easily use image=<img1>;<img2>;..., though this clearly doesn't scale well (which may suggest that this isn't a good approach...) I think what Tobias is getting at is that there's perhaps no "correct" value for the image=* tag. Some will see this as a bad thing, and see this as meaning that its value is not "objective". If the value of image=* for a feature is defined as "one or more images that show the feature", then I think that this is at least verifiable, in that the tag can be said to be true or false.
